The quality of the air we breathe is something we often take for granted in clean Singapore - that is until haze season arrives! However, we actually breathe in a lot more pollutants on a regular basis than we tend to realise, which has long-term adverse effects on our health.
Hence, we at Synced have put together a list of the best air purifiers in Singapore for your reference. It is never too late to start thinking about improving your quality of life.
Best Overall: Blueair Blue Pure 211+
Earning the praise of many critics, as well as the top spot on this list, is the Blueair Blue Pure 211+. Blueair is very well-known for its quality air purifiers, and the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ is the best of the lot. Weighing in at about 5.7kg, this air purifier is relatively portable.
Furthermore, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ has a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 350 cubic feet per minute (cfm). What exactly is CADR? Well, this simply refers to the cubic feet per minute of air that has had all the particles of a given size distribution removed. At 350 cfm, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ is able to clean an impressive 525 square feet.
Now, for one of the most important features of an air purifier - the filters. For a start, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ has a pre-filter that removes larger airborne contaminants such as hair or lint. This pre-filter can be vacuumed, and is also machine-washable, which adds to no small amount of convenience for the user.
Furthermore, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ also has a particle filter. While this filter is not HEPA-certified, it is made of polypropylene, which is the same material traditional HEPA filters are made of. This filter serves to remove smaller particulate matter like bacteria and smoke particles - the latter of which makes the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ especially useful if you do a lot of cooking.
Finally, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ also features a carbon mesh filter that aids in removing odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
An attractive feature of the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ is how it is controlled by a singular button, which controls fan speed as well as turns the air purifier on and off. This saves you a lot of confusion when it comes to fiddling with an array of buttons and lights!
The Blueair Blue Pure 211+ also has an LED that will turn red to inform you when it is time to replace the filter - this means that you rest assured that you will always be able to keep your air purifier in prime condition without having to keep an eye on it excessively.
Furthermore, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ is outstandingly quiet, with a noise level range of 30 to 60 decibels. This is around the noise level of a library, and even softer than a normal conversation! Thus, you'll never have to worry about having your conversations or your sleep disrupted by the whirring of your air purifier.
Finally, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ has a low energy consumption of 30 to 60 watts.
Overall, for its affordable price point, the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ is a very solid pick for an air purifier and is a well-rounded pick. If this interests you, shop the Blueair Blue Pure 211+ here.
Best Value-For-Money: Coway AP-1512HH Mighty
With dimensions of 46.5cm x 42.7cm x 24.4cm and weighing in at around 5.4kg, while the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty isn't the smallest of air purifiers, it is still relatively portable and unobtrusive, especially because it is designed in a flat shape.
The Coway AP-1512HH Mighty is able to clean up to 361 square feet and has a CADR of 240 cfm for pollen, 246 cfm for dust, and 233 cfm for smoke.
As the name suggests, the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty is indeed a mighty air purifier. The main reason for this? The Coway AP-1512HH Mighty's formidable four-stage filtration system, which guarantees that all pollutants, big or small, will be cleansed thoroughly from your environment.
Firstly, the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty has a fine mesh pre-filter that removes large pollutants, similar to that of the Blueair Blue Pure 211+. This filter is also washable.
Next, the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty has a de-odourisation filter, which removes odours and VOCs. This is done through the integration of activated carbon, although it may not be as effective as a true carbon filter. Nevertheless, it still does its job.
Following that comes the True HEPA filter, which is where much of the heavy-lifting is done. This filter is capable of removing a stunning 99.97% of pollutants down to 0.3 microns - meaning that even pesky micro-organisms can be captured!
Finally, the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty finishes off with an ionizer. As the name suggests, this releases negative ions to freshen the air. With this as the final step, you can ensure that your air is truly completely cleansed and purified.
The Coway AP-1512HH Mighty ensure that you are well updated on the quality of your air, as well as your air purifier itself. This is done through an air quality indicator, as well as a filter status indicator. The former changes from blue to purple to red depending on how polluted your air is, with red signifying high pollution, whereas the latter informs you when it is time to change your carbon and HEPA filters.
Furthermore, the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty is sensitive to the concentration of air pollutants, and will automatically adjust the fan speed depending on how polluted the air is.
The particle sensor continuously counts ambient air pollutants in real-time. If the concentration is high, the sensor sends a signal to the purifier, which adjusts the fan speed to keep the air pollutant-free. To activate this feature, you have to set the fan speed on auto mode.
Finally, despite how powerful this air purifier is, it is also astonishingly soft. At its highest fan speed, the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty only produces 53.8 decibels of noise, whereas, at its lowest fan speed, it produces 24.4 decibels. Similar to the Blueair Blue Pure 211+, this is around the noise level of a library at its softest, and still lower than a normal conversation at its highest!
Considering everything the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty offers, it retails at a relatively affordable price point and is definitely one of the most value-for-money picks you can get. If this sounds like it's for you, you can shop the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty here.
Best for Large Spaces: Coway Airmega 400
The Coway Airmega 400 doesn't have "mega" in its name for no reason - at 37.6 cm x 57.9 cm x 37.6 cm, and weighing in at 11.2kg, the Coway Airmega 400 is definitely one of the heftier air purifiers on this list. However, this is for good reason!
Similar to how it tends to the "mega" side when it comes to size, the Coway Airmega 400's cleaning capabilities also lie on the "mega" side, with the Coway Airmega 400 being able to clean around 784 square feet, even greater than the Blueair Blue Pure 211+. To be more specific, the Coway Airmega 400 is able to clean up to 6 240 cubic feet about 4 times per hour. That is an astounding cleaning rate and one that remains largely unmatched.
The Coway Airmega 400 is relatively uncomplicated when it comes to its filters.
Firstly, it has pre-filters on each side of the air purifier, which remove large pollutants. Similar to the other air purifiers mentioned, these can be vacuumed or washed under running water.
Next, the Coway Airmega 400 has Max2 filters under each pre-filter, which integrated activated carbon and True HEPA layers. Similar to the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty, these capture 99.97% of airborne pollutants down to the size of 0.3 microns, along with VOCs. While it is not as thorough as the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty, the Coway Airmega 400 definitely still performs well, especially considering that this coverage extends to an extremely large area.
Similar to the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty, the Coway Airmega 400 has an indicator that will change colours to allow you to assess the air quality, though the Coway Airmega 400 changes from blue to purple to pink to red instead.
What stands out about the Coway Airmega 400 is how smart it is when to comes to energy consumption. This is due to the implementation of a feature known as Smart mode. Upon detecting that pollution levels have remained low for 10 minutes, the fan in the Coway Airmega 400 will stop until it detects pollutants again. This allows you to save greatly on energy consumption, allowing you to avoid staggering electricity bills!
In terms of noise level, the Coway Airmega 400 also has a noise level range of around 22 to 52 decibels, similar to the other two air purifiers mentioned.
The Coway Airmega 400 may not be extremely outstanding in terms of functions (though this is not to say it is not still an impressive air purifier) - but where it shines is in its ability to clean very large spaces. Hence, for anyone looking for an air purifier for large homes or offices, you can't go wrong by shopping the Coway Airmega 400 here.
Best for Beginners: Blueair Blue Pure 411
With the range of excellent air purifiers out there, it may be daunting to just choose one if you're just starting out, and would just like a simple air purifier to test out to understand your true needs when it comes to your air purifier. In that case, we cannot recommend the Blueair Blue Pure 411 as a beginner-friendly air purifier enough.
In terms of aesthetics, the Blueair Blue Pure 411 has a friendly, attractive countenance, and at a height of 42.5 cm and a diameter of 20cm, it definitely will not cause any obstruction in your home. Furthermore, with a weight of 1.5kg, this air purifier is among the lightest and most compact air purifiers out there. However, it should be noted that due to its size, the Blueair Blue Pure 411 can only clean up to 161 square feet.
In terms of filtration, the Blueair Blue Pure 411 is also fuss-free and provides good, standard filtration.
Firstly, the Blueair Blue Pure 411 has a pre-filter to remove large contaminants. This filter can be vacuumed.
Next, the Blueair Blue Pure 411 has a polypropylene particle filter, similar to the Blueair Blue Pure 211+. While this filter is also not HEPA-certified, it still captures 99% of pollutants like dust mites and fungi. Furthermore, with the implementation of HEPASilent technology, the air purifier does not produce a high amount of noise. This filter is also anti-bacterial and recyclable.
Finally, the Blueair Blue Pure 411 has an activated carbon filter that removes smoke, odours, and VOCs.
If you want commercial-grade pollutant removal, obviously this is not for you, but for maintaining less polluted, smaller spaces it's great. Low noise, no fuss.
Much like the Blueair Blue Pure 211+, the Blueair Blue Pure 411 has one button to switch between its three fan speeds, with a noise level range of 17 to 46 decibels. This doesn't even come close to the noise produced by a regular conversation, and truly makes the Blueair Blue Pure 411 one of the quietest air purifiers you can find on the market.
Overall, with how affordable it is, the Blueair Blue Pure 411 is one of the best standard beginner air purifiers you can get. If this sounds like the right fit for you, shop the Blueair Blue Pure 411 here.
While we have been blessed with relatively good air quality for a densely-populated city like Singapore, in terms of not encountering any major pollution events, this leaves us vulnerable to the more unseen and low-lying threats present in our air.
