Ring Battery Doorbell Pro vs Wired Doorbell Pro: It’s More than Just the Power Source

Updated February 2024
Ring Wired Doorbell Pro, formerly known as the Video Doorbell Pro 2, has long been Ring's most advanced doorbell. However, its limitation on installation, which requires wiring, means it's not a suitable option for everyone.
The new Ring Battery Doorbell Pro, on the other hand, is a wireless doorbell option that offers equally advanced features without the need for wiring. This new model becomes a great alternative for those who cannot install the wired version, but still want the most advanced features in a doorbell.
However, do the two models only differ in how you install them? Or are there other differences between the two that you should consider before making a purchase? Let's find out!
Key Takeaways
The Wired model only supports wired installation, while the Battery model supports both wireless and wired installation. However, the Wired model has the Advanced Pre-Roll feature, while the Battery model only has the basic Pre-Roll feature. Pre-Roll allows you to see what happened before the motion sensor was triggered, and the Advanced one has a longer recording time and higher resolution for better security.

#1 Price
Ring Wired Doorbell Pro
When it was first released in 2021, the Ring Wired Doorbell Pro costs US$249.99. However, by 2024, the price has now dropped to US$229.99. This is the exact same price as the Ring Battery Doorbell Pro, which retails at US$229.99 when it was released in February 2024. With both models having an equal cost, price would not be a deciding factor when choosing between the two.
#2 Design
Ring Battery Doorbell Pro
Though the Battery and Wired Doorbell Pro share a similar design style, both models look visually different. They both feature a circular LED light ring around the button, but the Battery Doorbell Pro has its black finish on top while the Wired Doorbell Pro has it on the inner side of the device. The Wired model also has a taller proportion, measuring 4.49 x 1.9 x 0.87 inches, while the Battery model measures 5.1 x 2.4 x 1.1 inches.
However, these design differences do not affect the overall functionality of the doorbells. It's just a matter of personal preference and how the doorbell will fit into your home's aesthetic.
#3 Video Quality
Ring Wired Doorbell Pro
The Ring Battery Doorbell Pro and Ring Wired Doorbell Pro have no differences when it comes to video quality. Both can deliver a maximum of 1536p video resolution, which is the highest video resolution currently available on the Ring doorbell series. Such a high resolution allows for great detail and clarity, but if you want an even higher resolution of up to 2K, check out a new model from Wyze which comes at a lower price point, the Wyze Video Doorbell v2.

Both the Ring Battery and Wired Doorbell Pro also have a wide field of view of 150° horizontally and 150° vertically, which ensures that you can see everything in front of your doorbell and even the packages on the ground.
The Color Night Vision on both models also ensures that you can see clear footage even in low light conditions, while HDR helps to balance over-exposed images during bright daylight conditions. With both models offering equally high-quality video, you won't have to compromise on video quality regardless of which model you choose.
#4 Smart Features
Pre-Roll Video Feature
Perhaps, the more defining difference between the Ring Battery Doorbell Pro and its Wired counterpart can be seen in the smart features they both offer. While both models offer a Pre-Roll feature, which captures a few-second video before a motion event is triggered, the Wired Doorbell Pro offers an Advanced Pre-Roll while the Battery Doorbell Pro offers the more basic Pre-Roll.
The Advanced Pre-Roll captures up to 6 seconds of video in HD, full color, and with full sound, while the basic Pre-Roll captures only up to 4 seconds of video in Low Definition and without sound. The Advanced Pre-Roll also fully functions even in low light, while the basic Pre-Roll does not. For a more detailed comparison between the two, check out an article by Ring here.
Bird's Eye View Feature
Besides this one difference, both doorbell cameras offer similar smart features, including live view, two-way audio, quick replies, motion detection, alerts, customizable motion zones, Alexa compatibility, and even more with Ring Protect subscription.
Some other features that both models offer that set the two apart from other lower-priced doorbells in the market include 3D Motion Detection, which uses radar technology to pinpoint movements, Bird's Eye View, which lets you see an aerial map view of your property and the path of motion, and Bird's Eye Zones, which allows you to customize the motion zones based on the Bird's Eye View.
#5 Installation
Ring Battery Doorbell Pro
Installation is another defining difference between the Ring Wired Doorbell Pro and the Battery Doorbell Pro. The Wired model, as the name suggests, requires wiring for installation. You need to have existing doorbell wiring to use it, but that means you can connect it to your existing doorbell chime for a more traditional ringing experience, though the process can be quite complicated if you're less experienced.
On the other hand, the Battery Doorbell Pro is wireless, making it easy to install and set up without any wiring. It is powered by a quick-release battery pack, which you can remove easily for recharging without having to remove the entire doorbell. If you'd like, you can also hardwire the Battery Doorbell Pro for a more permanent power source, but this is optional.

Final Thoughts
Ring Wired Doorbell Pro
Two aspects that matter when comparing the Ring Battery Doorbell Pro and the Wired Doorbell Pro are the installation process and the type of Pre-Roll features they offer.
While the Wired model only supports hardwired installation, the Battery model supports both wireless and wired installation for greater flexibility and convenience. However, the Wired model offers an Advanced Pre-Roll feature, while the Battery model only offers the basic Pre-Roll feature.
When choosing between the two, it is a matter of weighing the importance of the Advanced Pre-Roll feature against the convenience and flexibility of installation.
