#1 Best Overall: iPhone SE (2020)

iPhone SE (2020)

iPhone SE (2020)

Our current top pick for the best smartphone you can buy for your kid is the iPhone SE (2020). Blending a vast array of features and high-quality camera capabilities, this is the smartphone you should get for your kid.

A relatively compact handset, the iPhone SE (2020) is one of the more lightweight and pocketable iPhones out there. While Apple may have designed the iPhone SE (2020) similarly to the iPhone 8, the innards have been upgraded to include an A13 Bionic processor. From looking up information for homework to watching videos, there's little the iPhone SE (2020) can't do. Because of the A13 chipset, camera performance has improved as well. The iPhone SE (2020) takes bright photos that will please most people.

Although Apple has greatly supercharged the iPhone SE (2020)'s engine, some drawbacks include a lacklustre battery life unless your kid is a light user and lacks a headphone jack at the bottom.

#2 Best for Restrictions: Gabb Z2

Gabb Z2

Gabb Z2

The Gabb Z2 is a great introduction to your kids without the freedom of the internet and apps.

Looks and feels like a smartphone, the Gabb Z2 has zero internet access. This means no games, no YouTube and no inappropriate searches on the internet which can go a long way towards easing your mind. With limited things to do, the Gabb Z2 probably sounds boring. But, it's not that so, as it features, a radio, music player, front and back cameras and a photo and video editor.

What separates the Gabb Z2 from the other phones is the companion app for parents. The MyGabb app provides insights into the phone's battery status, phone location and many more. The Safe Zones feature within the app blew our minds. Once you've set up a geofence, you'll be notified whenever the Gabb Z2 enters or leaves a zone you've designated.

It's a shame that the Gabb Z2 is missing a form of water resistance. The phone is more likely to be ruined if your kid isn't careful about the Gabb Z2 coming into contact with dirt or water. Nevertheless, it has a great battery life which lasts for a day.

#3 Best for Basic Functions: Alcatel SmartFlip

Alcatel SmartFlip

Alcatel SmartFlip

The Alcatel Smartflip is a great alternative if you want a basic phone that attends to fuss-free communication with your kids.

Though it's made of plastic, this smartphone looks like it could take a beating. While the 320x240 resolution on the outside and the 128x128 pixel resolution on the inside might not be as impressive, the large, tactile keys make it pleasing to use. The Alcatel doesn't disappoint when it comes to calling quality - performance is crisp and clear. Other notable features include a Google Assistant to aid with voice searches and general questions and a voice to text dictation engine.

Despite all the good features, the smartphone is unable to block text from strangers or even spam calls. It's worth noting that the Alcatel Smartflip can last up to three or four days and needs only to be charged twice a week.

#4 Best for Style: Nokia 3310 3G

Nokia 3310 3G

Nokia 3310 3G

A blast from the past, the Nokia 3310 3G, like all of its predecessors, suits as a device that looks amazing but also has long-lasting battery life.

Design-wise, the 3310 3G is set to give you a retro throwback. It's also surprisingly pocketable. Reviewers find it can be slipped in next to your wallet. Unlike modern smartphones, the Nokia 3310 3G's resolution isn't impressive at 240 x 320 even though it has full colour and a bright display. Other than texts and calls, the Nokia 3310 3G comes with a variety of basic apps such as Internet, Messaging, Calls, Contacts and more.

The games on the Nokia 3310 3G take you back to old-school games. Snake Xenzia, Doodle Jump and Diamond Twister 2 are some games you'll find on the phone. Reviewers find performance on the Nokia 3310 3G to be mediocre and apps open with a slight delay. Battery life is solid and lasts almost a week.

#5 Best for Gaming: Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC

Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC

Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC

Featuring top-tier speakers and a 120Hz wide colour gamut screen, the Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC is the best choice if your kid enjoys gaming.

The Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC is special because of its 6.67 inches 2400 x 1800 LCD screen and a refresh rate of 120 times per second. It's able to tackle demanding games such as Fortnite and ARK: Survival Evolved that cheaper models aren't able to. Photos on the Poco X3 NFC may appear to have oil-painting like quality to it and areas in photos with bright light have purple fringing.

If you need solid battery life, the Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC is worth considering. It runs up to a full day even if your kid spends far too long viewing videos or playing games.
