Wyze Video Doorbell v2 vs Pro

In October 2023, Wyze released its newest video doorbell, the Wyze Video Doorbell v2, which has some notable improvements over its predecessor. Dubbed as Wyze's clearest and most capable wired video doorbell yet, how does it compare to the 2021-released premium model, the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro? Let's dive into the 5 key consideration aspects to find out.

Key Takeaways

The v2 has better video quality with 2K resolution and color night vision, while the Pro model only offers 1440p with standard night vision. The v2 also offers free local storage while the Pro model requires a subscription for cloud storage. However, the Pro model is easier to install as it is battery-powered while the v2 requires hardwiring.

#1 Price

Despite its technological improvements, the Wyze Video Doorbell v2 is priced lower than the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro. It costs only US$39.99 for a doorbell and a chime controller, and it is also available as a bundle with a 128 GB microSD card for local storage at a total cost of US$54.99. Meanwhile, the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro is priced at around US$93.99, which includes a doorbell and a chime.

#2 Design

Wyze Video Doorbell Pro

Featuring a similar rectangular shape and a polycarbonate body, the Wyze Video Doorbell v2 and Pro have a sleek and modern design that can fit any home's exterior. Both video doorbells are also weatherproof with an IP65 rating, which means they can withstand any sort of weather conditions including wind, snow, and rain, without getting damaged.

One striking difference is that while the v2 comes in full black color with a glossy finish, the Pro comes in white with black accents and has a more matte finish. The v2 is also slightly smaller than the Pro, but this difference is negligible, as both models are compact and unobtrusive.

#3 Video Camera Quality

The Wyze Video Doorbell v2 wins when it comes to video camera quality, as it offers a crystal clear 2K (2048 x 1536) video resolution, while the Pro model only offers a maximum video resolution of 1440 x 1440. In addition, the v2 features the new Color Night Vision, which allows you to see a full-color image of your front porch at night, rather than the traditional black and white as seen in the Pro model.

Both models also have a different field of view due to differences in aspect ratio, with the v2 offering a 135° horizontal, 103° vertical, and 166.8° diagonal field of view, while the Pro offers a 150° horizontal and 150° vertical field of view. However, the resulting footage is equally wide in both models, allowing you to see more of who's at the door from head to toe.

#4 Smart Features

Wyze Video Doorbell Pro

The Wyze Video Doorbell v2 retains some of the smart features from the Pro model, such as live view, motion detection and alerts, two-way audio, preset quick responses, and compatibility with Alexa and Google Assistant. If you subscribe to Wyze Cam Plus, both models also offer 14-day video cloud storage and AI detection, which allows you to get notified of people, packages, pets, and vehicles instead of just any motion detection.

Compared to the Pro model, the v2 also offers some new features. Its support for local storage of up to 256 GB allows for continuous local recording, while the Pro model only relies on cloud storage available in the subscription plan. It also offers a pre-roll video, so you can see what happened before a motion event was triggered, while the Pro model only supports this feature when hardwired.

The Wyze Video Doorbell v2 also features motion-activated voice deterrence, which automatically plays a pre-recorded message to alert visitors that they are being recorded and that their actions are being monitored. This is a great security feature to deter potential intruders or unwanted visitors. The Pro model, on the other hand, only offers a motion-activated security light, which illuminates the light around the button when motion is detected.

Despite the advantages that the v2 offers, it also has at least one limitation. While the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro comes with a chime included, the v2 model doesn't. This Wyze Chime Pro allows you to choose between 20 unique tunes and 8 sound levels to customize your doorbell experience, from traditional ring sounds to chirp and bark sounds. The v2, on the other, is currently not compatible with any Wyze Chime. If you use your own existing doorbell chime, the tune customization may be more limited.

#5 Installation

As hardwiring is required, installation of the Wyze Video Doorbell v2 can be a bit tricky for those who are not familiar with electrical work. However, as all the required hardware is included, you should be able to complete the installation if you carefully follow the instructions provided.

Installing the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro, on the other hand, can be a lot easier. You can mount it as simply as sticking the 3M adhesive mounting plate that comes with the device onto your doorframe. If you want a more secure placement, a screw kit is also provided. Hardwiring is supported but not required, as the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro is powered by rechargeable batteries that can last for up to 3-6 months. This gives the Pro model more flexibility in terms of installation options.

In addition, the Pro model comes with a chime that you can install in your house, while the v2 model comes only with a chime controller that connects your existing chime with the video doorbell. This allows you to use your traditional chime if you have one, but if you don't, you will need to purchase a separate chime to hear the doorbell ring or choose to receive notifications on your phone only.

Another difference to consider when it comes to installation is that while the Wyze Video Doorbell v2 is only compatible with a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro is compatible with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks. A 5 GHz Wi-Fi network can provide faster data transfer speeds and better connectivity, making the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro a better option for those who have a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal in their homes.

However, the v2 model also has an advantage with its 30° Corner Kit included in the package, which can be installed to adjust the viewing angle of the camera to better capture the area you want to monitor. This is something that the Pro model doesn't offer, but it is available to be purchased separately.

Final Thoughts

The Wyze Video Doorbell v2 edges ahead of the Wyze Video Doorbell Pro in terms of video quality, local storage, and price, while the Pro model is more flexible in terms of installation options and offers battery power and a chime included.

If you're new to smart video doorbells and are looking for a budget-friendly option with great video quality and local storage, the Wyze Video Doorbell v2 is a great choice. However, if you already own a Wyze Video Doorbell Pro, upgrading to the newer v2 model may not be necessary as the 1440p resolution is still good enough for most purposes, unless you really need the local storage feature.
