Design

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 vs. DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

While DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is indeed smaller in size, both action cameras are equally compact enough to be easily carried and mounted on various gear. They each come with an adapter mount that attaches to the camera magnetically for quick and easy attachment and detachment.

Both cameras are also built to endure, featuring a rugged, weather-resistant design that can handle extreme temperatures from -20°C to 45°C. When it comes to waterproofing, however, the DJI Action 5 Pro takes the lead. It can withstand submersion up to 20 meters without any additional housing, while the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 only has a waterproof rating of 12 meters without housing.

Another aspect that gives the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro an advantage is its dual OLED touchscreen display, measuring 2.5" on the front and 1.46" on the rear, allowing for intuitive control and framing no matter whether you're recording yourself or others.

While the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 also has a dual display setup, its front screen is a small, status-only 0.7" LCD. There is no dedicated front-facing display for framing selfies, but thankfully, the 2.5" LCD touchscreen on the rear is flippable, making it possible to adjust the screen to suit your needs best.

The pixel density of the two cameras' main display is similar at 326ppi, but OLED technology is generally brighter and more vibrant than LCD. DJI claimed that the rear screen of the Osmo Action 5 Pro reaches a peak brightness of 1000 nits compared to the Ace Pro 2's flip touchscreen at 900 nits.

Video & Photo

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro are both powered by a 1/1.3" sensor with very similar specs – 2.4 μm equivalent pixel size and 13.5 stops of dynamic range. This gives them a comparably excellent low-light performance and the ability to capture high-quality photos and videos.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro features a smaller 4nm chip as compared to the Insta360 Ace Pro 2's 5nm AI chip. Generally, a smaller chip is better in terms of efficiency, performance, and heat management. However, the Ace Pro 2 features an additional Pro Imaging Chip, which helps its 5nm AI chip deliver enhanced computing power and noise reduction.

This dual AI chip on the Ace Pro 2, coupled with a Leica-engineered Summarit lens, enables significantly higher-resolution video and photos. Insta360 Ace Pro 2 can take up to 8K/30 fps videos and 50 MP photos, while the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro maxes out at 4K/60 fps and 40 MP.

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 also features two Leica color profiles, including Leica Vivid and Leica Natural, which bring unique color tones and styles to its imagery.

However, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro supports 10-bit color with D-Log M or HLG, capturing higher dynamic range and more flexibility for post-processing. This gives the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro an advantage for professional video production workflows.

Audio

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 vs. DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

Featuring 3 built-in microphones, both the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro deliver excellent audio capture with advanced noise reduction and wind suppression capabilities.

The Insta360 Ace Pro 2 goes further with an integrated wind guard, which physically blocks wind from interfering with the microphones, providing even cleaner audio capture in windy conditions compared to the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro's algorithm-only-based wind suppression.

Both action cameras support an external microphone connection using an optional mic adapter, but the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is optimized for use with DJI Mic 2 while the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 equally works with a range of external microphones, including Bluetooth headsets like Apple AirPods and motorcycle helmet headsets like Sena.

DJI OsmoAudio Connectivity Ecosystem allows the Osmo Action 5 Pro to connect to two DJI Mic 2 simultaneously and deliver ultra-high sample-rate audio recording at 48 kHz. You can also enable the audio backup feature to record a secondary audio track using the built-in microphone in addition to the external microphone input.

If you use a DJI Mic 2 for audio recording, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro will have the advantage. But if you need to connect a wider range of external microphones, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 offers more flexibility.

Features

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

Some common features that the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 and DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro share include timecode for multi-camera synchronization, advanced image stabilization, voice control, and sports data integration from compatible devices and activity trackers.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro has an advantage with a built-in air pressure gauge and water pressure gauge, which can measure altitude and depth when you're hiking or diving. The data is displayed in real-time while recording and can be overlaid on your video footage later during editing.

Talking about editing, both cameras also offer their own companion apps for camera control and editing. The Insta360 app offers AI-powered features like AI Highlights Assistant, Auto Editing, and AI Warp, which can automatically create compelling videos from your footage.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro offers a similar One-Tap Editing feature on the LightCut app, which uses AI to automatically create a shareable video based on the available templates. There is also the DJI Mimo app for camera control, editing, and sharing capabilities, though I find the single app experience of Insta360 to be more streamlined and user-friendly.

One feature that the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 has but the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro lacks is gesture control, which can be very useful for hands-free operation when voice control is not an option.

Battery Life

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro has a large battery capacity of 1950mAh, allowing it to last for a good long while on a single charge. When recording at 1080p/24 fps, it can last for up to 240 minutes (4 hours).

While the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 also offers a decent 1800mAh battery and a long-lasting runtime of 180 minutes (3 hours) at the same 1080p/24fps recording setting, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro's an-hour longer runtime makes it the winner in this category.

However, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 has its own unique advantage with a reverse charging capability, allowing it to serve as a backup power bank to charge smartphones or when needed.

Final Thoughts

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 vs. DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 offers superior image resolution, more flexibility in terms of external microphone connectivity, and some additional features like a wind guard and gesture control.

On the other hand, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro excels in areas like waterproofing, dual OLED displays, a longer battery life, and an additional depth and altitude gauge. It also supports 10-bit color with D-Log M, catering to professional videographers who need more control over color grading in post-production.

It is hard to determine who takes the lead overall, it ultimately depends on your specific needs - choose the Ace Pro 2 if you prioritize image resolution and versatile audio options, or the Osmo Action 5 Pro if you're a professional videographer who values the 10-bit color or a diver who needs the deeper waterproofing and depth gauge functionality.
