Insta360 Ace Pro vs. Insta360 Ace Pro 2

After one year of the original Insta360 Ace Pro's release, the company has unveiled the Ace Pro 2, a refreshed version of their popular rugged action camera. What are the upgrades introduced in the new Insta360 Ace Pro 2? Are they significant or just minor tweaks?

Key Takeaways

Except for the new wind guard and Leica color profiles, Insta360 Ace Pro 2 offers just minor upgrades in terms of display, field of view, frame rate, photo resolution, AI chip, and runtime compared to the original Ace Pro. Features are also largely unchanged between the two, but the Ace Pro 2 is the more capable option for those who want the latest hardware and software improvements from Insta360.

Design

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 offers a 2.5-inch flip touchscreen, which is a very slight upgrade from the 2.4-inch touchscreen on the original Insta360 Ace Pro. I think we can ignore this minor screen size difference, but what perhaps should not be ignored is the improved pixel density.

The Ace Pro 2's display boasts 326 PPI, which is a 69.7% increase over the 192 PPI of the original Ace Pro. A higher pixel density means crisper and more detailed image previews on the camera's screen.

The Ace Pro 2 also saw an improvement in terms of water resistance, with the ability to withstand submersion up to 39ft (12m), compared to the 33ft (10m) water resistance of the original Ace Pro. When used with a dive case, both cameras can withstand depths of up to 197ft (60m).

Apart from the display and waterproof rating, all the other design aspects remain largely unchanged between the two models. They have a rugged, compact build measuring 72 x 52 x 38 mm with a magnetic mounting system that allows for easy attachment and detachment to various accessories.

Video & Photo

Insta360 Ace Pro

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 retains the 8K maximum resolution of the original Ace Pro, but now with a higher 30fps frame rate compared to the 24fps of the previous model. The acclaimed low light-optimized PureVideo mode and Active HDR video can now also support 4K/60 fps, which in the Ace Pro was limited to 4K/30 fps.

Photo resolution has also been improved, going from 48MP on the original Ace Pro to 50MP on the Ace Pro 2. It is a modest but meaningful upgrade in image quality.

Another key upgrade is the field of view, which has been increased from 151 degrees on the original Ace Pro to 157 degrees on the Ace Pro 2, providing a wider perspective for capturing more of the scene.

The technology behind these upgrades is the dual AI chip system on the Ace Pro 2, combining the Pro Imaging Chip and 5nm AI Chip. In comparison, the Ace Pro only features the 5nm AI Chip.

The Ace Pro 2 also introduces many more color profiles, including Leica-engineered Leica Vivid and Leica Natural, which allow for a more cinematic look. Other color profiles on the Ace Pro 2 include I-Log, Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Film, Vintage, Urban, and Night. Meanwhile, the original Ace Pro only offers 3 color profiles – Standard, Vivid, and Flat.

Audio

Both the Insta360 Ace Pro and Ace Pro 2 offer three built-in microphones, compatibility with external microphones and Bluetooth headsets, and a specialized Wind Reduction mode that uses advanced algorithms to minimize wind noise and capture clear audio.

Insta360 Ace Pro 2 goes one step further with the addition of a Wind Guard, which physically shields the microphones from wind interference, providing even better audio quality in blustery conditions.

Features

When it comes to features, the Insta360 Ace Pro and Ace Pro 2 are largely comparable, with both offering advanced capabilities FlowState Stabilization with 360° Horizon Lock, timecode, voice control, gesture control, and sports stats integration with compatible Garmin devices or Apple watch.

Editing features also remain largely the same, with both models supporting the Insta360 app's powerful post-processing capabilities like AI selfie stick eraser and AI-powered editing tools.

Battery Life

The 1800mAh battery of the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 provides up to 180 minutes of recording time at 1080p, a notable improvement over the 1650mAh battery and 120 minutes of recording time of the original Insta360 Ace Pro.

That's around 9% more battery capacity and 50% more recording time on the Insta360 Ace Pro 2. It's not a game-changing upgrade, but it does provide a meaningful boost in battery life.

The Ace Pro 2 also features reverse charging capability, allowing it to serve as a backup power bank to charge phones when needed.

Final Thoughts

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

Overall, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 offers a modest but meaningful set of upgrades over the original Ace Pro. While the changes are not revolutionary, they do make the Ace Pro 2 the more capable and future-proof option for those seeking the latest hardware and software improvements from Insta360. The improved display, wider field of view, higher frame rates, new color profiles, enhanced wind reduction with the wind guard, and longer battery life are all welcome refinements that elevate the user experience.

For Ace Pro owners, the decision to upgrade doesn't seem like a necessity. But for new buyers, these incremental enhancements make the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 the more compelling choice.
