Fitbit Versa 2 vs Versa 3: Which is better?

Fitbit Versa 2 vs Versa 3: Which is better?

Published April 2022
by Amirah Zakiyyah

The new Fitbit Versa 3 and its predecessor, the Fitbit Versa 2, are likely to be on the top of your list if you're looking for a smart fitness tracker. Even though the new model brings more advanced fitness tracking tools, it's undeniable that the Versa 2 has stood the test of time well, equipped with features you find on smartwatches nowadays. But is the Versa 2 or Versa 3 better?

We surveyed the differences across the following categories to see how the two match up.

1. Fitness and Health Tracking

2. Smartwatch Features

3. Design and Display

4. Battery Life

1. Fitness and Health Tracking

Both fitness trackers are evenly matched when fitness and health tracking are considered. Features such as tracking steps, distance, hourly activity, stationary time and active minutes remain on the Versa 3. In addition to 24/7 heart rate and sleep monitoring, both watches grant you access to guided breathing exercises and all-day calorie burns.

The Fitbit Versa 3 features a built-in GPS which the Fitbit Versa 2 lacks. This will be a huge benefit for runners and cyclists as outdoor activities can be geographically tracked without phones. Another plus is the heart zone maps that only come with the Versa 3.

Other than offering features like mental health tracking, both the Fitbit Versa 2 and Fitbit Versa 3 enables you to monitor resting heart rate and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). Another standout from the Versa 3 as compared to the Versa 2 is the PurePulse 2.0 heart monitor. With a combination of machine learning and the collection of more data points, Fitbit claims heart-rate readings should be more accurate and detailed than the Fitbit Versa 2.

2. Smartwatch Features

The extensive Smartwatch features in the Versa 3 make it a more appealing prospect than the older model.

Firstly, while the integration with Amazon Alexa found in both watches is great, the Fitbit Versa 3 has an added compatibility with Google Assistant. This makes it a better option for those who have Google Home smart devices.

Another difference is that the Fitbit Versa 2 offers offline music storage which the Fitbit Versa 3 lacks. The Versa 2 can store over 300 songs. That way, when you go for workouts, you can leave your phone at home and listen to music right from your wrist with a good pair of Bluetooth headphones. To listen to music on the Fitbit Versa 3, you can download playlists from Deezer or Pandora to your watch. But, if you're using Spotify, it will only allow you to control music from the Versa 3.

A feature that's not supported in the Fitbit Versa 2 but that's available on the Fitbit Versa 3 is taking calls with your wrist. Moreover, you can send calls to voicemail and adjust call volume provided Bluetooth is within range.

3. Design and Display

The Fitbit Versa 2 and Fitbit Versa 3 look similar, however, there are subtle differences that distinguish the older Versa 2 from the newer Versa 3.

Sporting the same square case with rounded edges, the Fitbit Versa 2 has the same appearance as the first Versa, except with the addition of a curved display. Design-wise, Fitbit Versa 3 was inspired heavily by the Fitbit Sense (we compared the Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3 in a previous article), but the Versa 3 is intended to give increased comfort with a slightly curvier outline and softer edges than the Versa 2.

More noticeably, the Versa 3 is bigger than the older model and shows more display-wise. The Fitbit Versa 3 has a 1.58-inch display and a 336 x 336 resolution, meaning you're able to view sharper graphics, more detailed graphs and more text at once. The Fitbit Versa 2 is smaller with a 1.39-inch display and a 300 x 300 resolution. There are a lot more colour options when you go for the Versa 3.

The Fitbit Versa 3 has five colour options (Midnight with Soft Gold aluminium, Black with Black aluminium, Pink Clay with Soft Gold aluminium, Thistle with Soft Gold aluminium and Olive with Soft Gold aluminium) whereas the Fitbit Versa 2 comes in three colours (Black with Carbon aluminium, Stone with Mist Gray aluminium and Petal with Copper Rose aluminium).

4. Battery Life

It doesn't matter if you prefer one watch over the other because Fitbit promises six days of battery life on a single charge for both devices. Yet, the Fitbit Versa 3 takes the lead in this category because of the new fast charging technology which provides 24 hours of battery with only 12 minutes of charge.

The Fitbit Versa 3 costs S$100 more than the older model, retailing at S$308. On the other hand, the Fitbit Versa 2 is substantially cheaper at S$208, which may be a deciding factor if you're on a limited budget.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Fitbit Versa 3 sounds like a better smartwatch because of the significant changes it comes with. The new fast charging technology, an extra smart assistant, a call function, and in-built GPS make it worth the extra S$100 you're paying for the Versa 3. That said, if you can survive without the in-built GPS, the Fitbit Versa 2 is just as good as the newer model.
