Theragun Prime Plus vs Hypervolt 2 Pro: Which Has Better Value for Money?

Updated October 2024
Theragun Prime Plus is perhaps the most comparable Theragun model to the Hypervolt 2 Pro in terms of features, power, and price point. However, they are still distinct products with their own unique strengths and limitations. How do they compare in terms of design, features, and overall value?
Key Takeaways
Theragun Prime Plus primarily stands out with its heat therapy feature, but Hypervolt 2 Pro also offers this with an optional heat attachment that still costs less in total, making it the better value option. Hypervolt 2 Pro also offers more attachments and a longer runtime, though the Prime Plus is more powerful with a slightly higher amplitude and stall force.

#1 Price
Hypervolt 2 Pro
Hypervolt 2 Pro is so far the most powerful massage gun (and also the most pricey) in the Hypervolt lineup, retailing at a premium price tag of US$329.
At US$399, Theragun Prime Plus is also quite an expensive option for a massage gun. But actually, in the Theragun lineup, the Prime Plus can be considered more of a mid-range option.
Theragun Prime Plus, as the name suggests, is an upgraded version of the original Theragun Prime model – which is a basic model featuring just the most essential features. Other higher-end Theragun models like the Pro and Elite come with more advanced features and functionalities.

#2 Design
Theragun Prime Plus
What sets the Theragun lineup apart from other massage guns in the market is its patented triangle design, which allows for multiple grip positions and easier reach to different body parts. In Theragun Prime Plus, this triangular design is improved in a more compact handle with a textured grip, making it more comfortable to use.
Hypervolt 2 Pro, on the other hand, comes in a drill-like design with a pill-shaped grip. It was also designed with comfort in mind, but the triangular design of the Theragun Prime Plus may provide more versatility in grip positions and reach to different body areas.
Theragun Prime Plus also weighs just 1.95 lbs (0.88 kg), which is around 20% lighter than the Hypervolt 2 Pro at 2.6 lbs (1.1 kg). A lighter design means less fatigue during extended use.
Hypervolt 2 Pro
One design element that both massage guns lack is a display. While the Theragun Prime Plus relies on buttons for power and adjustment, the Hypervolt 2 Pro uses a digital dial for users to cycle through the speed settings. LED indicators on both models show the current speed level.
One design aspect that the Hypervolt 2 Pro is superior in is the interchangeable attachment heads, which come in 5 different options – fork, ball, cushion, flat, and bullet. In comparison, Theragun Prime Plus offers 4 attachments – standard ball, dampener, wedge, and heat.
The bullet attachment in the Hypervolt 2 Pro is used to target smaller muscle groups and trigger points, and this is a function that none of the included attachment heads in the Theragun Prime Plus can perform. If you want that specific functionality, you'll need to buy a Thumb Plus attachment separately.
#3 Features
Theragun Prime Plus
Theragun Prime Plus offers a powerful percussive massage, reaching deep into the muscles with a stroke length of 16 mm and a maximum force of 40 pounds.
Hypervolt 2 Pro doesn't officially state its amplitude and force specs, it just mentions featuring a high-torque 90W motor – the most powerful in the Hypervolt lineup. However, reviews measured the amplitude of the Hypervolt 2 Pro to be around 14 mm and the maximum force to be around 35 pounds, so slightly less powerful than the Theragun Prime Plus.
Theragun Prime Plus has another advantage with its heat therapy feature. When the heat attachment is used, it can provide soothing warmth to the targeted muscle areas, which is claimed to deliver 3 times faster results than percussive massage alone. While the Hypervolt 2 Pro doesn't include a heat attachment, it is available to purchase separately for US$59.
Theragun Prime Plus can be further customized with the purchase of additional attachments for cold therapy and vibration therapy. The cold attachment is meant to treat injuries and reduce inflammation, while the vibration attachment is designed to treat sensitive joints and muscles. Hypervolt currently doesn't offer such attachments, so the Prime Plus remains more versatile in terms of the range of massage therapy features.
Hypervolt 2 Pro
Another difference between the two is the speed levels. Though both models have 5 levels of built-in speed that we can choose from, the Hypervolt 2 Pro has a wider speed range, from 1,700 to 2,700 percussions per minute, compared to 1,750 to 2,400 percussions per minute on the Theragun Prime Plus.
Theragun Prime Plus: 1750, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2400 PPM
Hypervolt 2 Pro: 1700, 1900, 2100, 2400, 2700 PPM
However, Hypervolt 2 Pro only allows us to choose one of the five preset speed levels, while Theragun Prime Plus offers the ability to fine-tune the speed in increments. This is possible when the Prime Plus is connected to the Therabody app, where we can freely customize the speed to anywhere between 1,750 to 2,400 PPM.
Hypervolt 2 Pro can also connect to the Hyperice app via Bluetooth, but speed customization is not available. What the app does offer is an access to guided routines, automated control of the massage gun, and integration with third-party apps like Strava or Apple Health. These are in-app features that the Therabody app also provides.
If accessing guided routines from the app sounds like a hassle for you, Theragun Prime Plus also includes some physical routine cards. These are less comprehensive compared to in-app guided routines, but can be a quick and convenient way to get started without needing to use the app. Some examples include Full Body Warm-Up, Upper Body Recovery, and Lower Body Recovery.
#4 Battery
Hypervolt 2 Pro
When it comes to battery, the Hypervolt 2 Pro is the superior option. Not only that it boasts a longer runtime of 180 minutes – compared to Theragun Prime Plus at 150 minutes of runtime – but the battery is also detachable.
When it runs out, we can detach it and swap in a fully charged battery to continue using the massage gun. The additional battery handle costs US$79. Meanwhile, the Prime Plus has a built-in battery that cannot be replaced.

Final Thoughts
Theragun Prime Plus
Theragun Prime Plus packs more power and features in a lighter, more ergonomic design compared to the Hypervolt 2 Pro. However, when it comes to value for money, I think the Hypervolt 2 Pro is the better option.
At US$329 (or US$388 if you also want to add a heat therapy feature), it is cheaper than the Prime Plus, has a longer runtime, and comes with more attachment heads for versatile massage therapy. It also shares the same core massage features as the Prime Plus, including in-app massage routines and automated control, just with a slightly less powerful motor.
