Theragun Prime Plus vs Theragun Sense

Theragun from Therabody is one of the most popular and effective percussive massage devices on the market. It comes in a variety of models to suit different needs and budgets, and the Prime Plus and Sense are some of the mid-range options. How do they compare in terms of features and which one better suits your needs?

Key Takeaways

Theragun Prime Plus supports a wide range of physical therapy options like cold, heat, and vibration, while Theragun Sense puts more emphasis on mind and body relaxation through features like breathwork and biometric sensor. Theragun Prime Plus has a simpler design but offers deeper massage with 16 mm amplitude, while Theragun Sense features an advanced display but with a lower 12 mm amplitude.

#1 Price

Theragun Prime Plus

We can consider both the Theragun Prime Plus and Theragun Sense to fall in the mid-range price point in the Theragun lineup, but the Prime Plus is the more premium option between the two.

Theragun Prime Plus is priced at US$399, while Theragun Sense is priced at US$299. That makes the difference between the two models $100, which can be a significant investment for a massage device.

#2 Design

Theragun Sense

In terms of design, I personally find the Theragun Sense to be more visually appealing. It doesn't only offer black and white color options with an aesthetically pleasing rose gold accent, but the device also features an LCD screen for easy control and monitoring of the massage settings.

In comparison, Theragun Prime Plus only comes in black with just buttons and LED indicators – such a basic control interface. However, Theragun Prime Plus may be more ergonomic with its anti-slip textured grip and can better withstand drops and scratches with its more durable construction.

Both massage equally offers 4 interchangeable attachments, though the types of attachments included are different. Theragun Sense comes with a Standard Ball, Dampener, Thumb, and Micro-Point, while Theragun Prime Plus comes with a Standard Ball, Dampener, Wedge, and Heated Percussive Plus.

The good news for the Prime Plus is that it is compatible with some other separately sold attachments, allowing for more customization options. The extra attachments available for the Prime Plus include Cold Plus Attachment, Vibration Plus Attachment, Thumb, and Micro-Point.

#3 Features

Theragun Prime Plus vs Theragun Sense

Theragun Prime Plus

Theragun Prime Plus has a higher 16 mm amplitude compared to 12 mm in the Theragun Sense, meaning that it can reach deeper into muscles for more intense massage therapy.

Theragun Prime Plus also supports additional therapy beyond percussive massage, including heat therapy for better muscle relaxation and recovery, cold therapy for injury treatment and inflammation reduction, and vibration therapy for treating sore joints. Heat therapy is included with the Prime Plus model, while cold and vibration therapies require separately sold attachments.

Theragun Sense only offers percussive massage, but it comes with breathwork and a built-in biometric sensor that can help with relaxation. The breathwork feature guides you through breathing exercises, with each vibration of the device signaling for inhalation or exhalation. The biometric sensor then tracks your heart rate to see the effects of the breathwork on your body.

Theragun Sense also stands out with on-device visual guided routines, thanks to its LCD screen. You can choose from 5 built-in guided routines (Back Pain, Tension Relief, Sleep Prep, and Low Body Recovery) or save your favorites from the Therabody app to the device. The display will guide you on where to massage and for how long.

Despite those differences, both devices share the same 40 lbs maximum stall force and 5 built-in speed levels. Bluetooth connection to the Therabody app is also supported on both massage guns, offering a library of guided routines, remote control of the device settings, speed customization, and more.

#4 Battery

Theragun Sense

Theragun Prime Plus offers a battery life of 150 minutes, which is 25% longer compared to the Theragun Sense with 120 minutes of runtime. That means, the Theragun Prime Plus gives more confidence for longer massage sessions without needing to recharge.

Final Thoughts

Theragun Prime Plus

Costing US$100 more than the Theragun Sense, Theragun Prime Plus combines percussive massage with heat therapy and optional cold and vibration therapy, providing a more comprehensive physical recovery.

However, Theragun Sense is not without its own merits, offering features like on-device visually guided routines, a breathwork feature, biometric sensor, and a more user-friendly LCD screen.

Theragun Prime Plus may be more appealing for those who prioritize deeper tissue massage and a wider range of therapy options, while Theragun Sense could be the better choice for users who prioritize convenience and relaxation.
