Amazfit GTR 4 vs Galaxy Watch 7

Amazfit is known for offering budget-friendly smartwatch options, and its GTR 4 is one of the top models offering robust fitness features capabilities. The Galaxy Watch 7, on the other hand, is Samsung's latest smartwatch that boasts advanced health tracking and smart features. If you're torn between the two, consider their pros and cons across these 5 key aspects!

Key Takeaways

The Galaxy Watch 7 excels in durability, health monitoring (ECG, BIA, sleep apnea), and smart features (NFC, LTE, Google apps) but has limited compatibility and shorter battery life. The GTR 4 offers better fitness features, cross-platform compatibility, a longer battery, and a budget-friendly price, but lacks the advanced health monitoring and smart capabilities of the Galaxy Watch 7.

Design & Display

While both smartwatches boast a premium appearance, the Amazfit GTR 4 looks more masculine with its sports car-inspired design in black, grey, and brown color options. The Galaxy Watch 7 has a more casual, unisex design appealing to both men and women, coming in various color and band options.

The Galaxy Watch 7 also offers two size options, so you can pick the one that best fits your wrist. The 40mm size features a 1.31" Super AMOLED display, while the 44mm case size has a larger 1.47" Super AMOLED display. In contrast, the Amazfit GTR 4 only comes in a single 46mm size with a 1.43" AMOLED display, which may be too large for some users.

Despite the Amazfit GTR 4's more sporty look, the Galaxy Watch 7 is in fact more durable. Other than featuring a scratch-resistant Sapphire Crystal Glass, it has been tested to military durability standard MIL-STD-810H with IP68 and 5 ATM dust and water-resistance rating. Meanwhile, the Amazfit GTR 4 is only rated 5 ATM for water resistance and features standard tempered glass instead of a Sapphire Crystal.

Health & Fitness Features

While basic health features like heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep, and stress tracking are equally present on both smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 7 offers more advanced health monitoring capabilities, including ECG to detect signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a BIA sensor for body composition analysis, and sleep apnea detection to detect signs of obstructive sleep apnea, a sleep-related breathing disorder.

When it comes to fitness-related features, both watches also share common features like built-in GPS, activity tracking, and support for over 100 workout modes. For basic workouts like walking, running, cycling, rowing machine, elliptical, and swimming, both watches support automatic workout detection, which means they can automatically recognize and track these activities if you forget to manually start the workout.

However, only the Amazfit GTR 4 has strength exercise recognition, which automatically detects 25 types of strength training activities and tracks the reps and sets. Such automatic rep counting is not available on the Galaxy Watch 7.

The Amazfit GTR 4 also stands out with AI-powered Zepp Coach, which generates training plans based on your fitness level, goals, and available training day. You can also see your Readiness Score each morning to understand your mental and physical preparedness for the day.

The Galaxy AI on the Galaxy Watch 7 cannot yet develop training plans, but it instead gives Wellness Tips, which are personalized suggestions to help you achieve your health and fitness goals. It also offers an Energy Score, which is similar to the Readiness Score on the GTR 4.

Smartwatch Features

Basic smart functionality like phone notifications, music playback and control, and phone camera control are supported by both watches. It's just that the camera control function on the Amazfit GTR 4 only works on iOS devices, while it works only on select Samsung Galaxy phones for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7.

The Amazfit GTR 4 and Galaxy Watch 7 equally feature a built-in speaker and microphone, so you can make and take calls. However, Amazfit GTR 4 only supports Bluetooth phone calls, which means you need a connected smartphone to make and receive calls. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 7 offers an LTE model, which allows you to make and receive calls independently without a connected smartphone.

Another difference between the two is that while they equally support voice assistants, the Galaxy Watch 7 offers Bixby, Google Assistant, and Alexa, while the Amazfit GTR 4 offers Alexa, Zepp Flow, and offline voice assistant.

Amazfit's Zepp Flow is a voice assistant powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o, allowing it to understand natural language and carry out different tasks. Galaxy Watch 7 also has AI features, known as Galaxy AI, which can make Suggested Replies and more.

One clear advantage that the Galaxy Watch 7 has is its wider app ecosystem, as it runs on Wear OS 5 and can access the Google Play Store, allowing you to install a wide range of third-party apps, including Google Maps and Spotify.

The Galaxy Watch 7 also features NFC, allowing you to make on-wrist payments with Samsung Pay. Meanwhile, the Amazfit GTR 4 does not have NFC.

Compatibility

In terms of compatibility, the Amazfit GTR 4 is more flexible. It supports both iOS and Android devices, so you can use it no matter what type of smartphone you have or if you may switch between ecosystems in the future.

In contrast, the Galaxy Watch 7 only supports Android and not iOS devices. It is also important to note that some features, particularly those powered by Galaxy AI, are only available on select Samsung Galaxy smartphones that support Galaxy AI, including the Galaxy S and Z series. This further limits its compatibility, as non-Samsung Android users won't be able to benefit from the full suite of Galaxy Watch 7 features.

Battery Life

With a 475 mAh battery, the Amazfit GTR 4 packs a larger battery capacity than the Galaxy Watch 7, which has a 425 mAh battery on the 44m model and 300 mAh on the 40mm model.

This results in a significantly longer battery life on the GTR 4, which is rated for up to 14 days of typical use or 25 days in battery-saver mode. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 7 can last as long as 100 hours (around 4 days) in power-saving mode, while normal use results in a battery life of 60 hours (around 2 days).

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 7 offers superior durability, a wider range of smartwatch features like NFC and LTE connectivity, and more advanced health monitoring functions like BIA, ECG, and sleep apnea detection.

Both come with pros and cons, so the choice will ultimately depend on your specific needs and priorities between fitness, health, smartwatch features, battery, and compatibility.
