On May 31, Fable Studio announced Showrunner, a new streaming service that lets users create their own TV episodes. It's like Netflix with AI-generated content that users can customize and share. But how does this new platform work?

#1 User-Generated AITV

Showrunner

Showrunner lets users watch AI-powered TV shows and generate their own episodes for the existing shows on the platform, or create their own whole new shows by choosing genres, providing prompts for the story, and customizing the characters, dialogue, shot types, and scene flow.

Remember when the ending of our favorite shows didn't satisfy us, or when we wished we could change the plot or character development? With Showrunner, we can now create our own sequel, spin-off, an alternative ending to the shows we love, or build an entirely new story we wish existed.

The company envisions future collaborations with Hollywood studios to expand the content available on the platform, promising revenue back to the original creators when fans generate new episodes.

However, Showrunner is currently focusing on the Showrunner Originals, which we'll explore in the next section.

#2 Showrunner Originals

Showrunner Originals

The Showrunner Originals currently lists 10 AI shows developed by Fable Studio, spanning various genres and taking place on Simulations.

Think of Simulations like a universe inspired by real cities where the story takes place, with AI characters called "Agents" that users can interact with and shape the narrative.

The first Showrunner Originals, 'Exit Valley', is a satirical portrayal of Silicon Valley that evokes the style of the American animated sitcom South Park. The story is based on 'Sim Fransisco', a Simulation inspired by San Francisco.

Another original, 'Ikiru Shinu', set in 2046 Neo-Tokyo, is a dark horror anime following survivors of a global catastrophe that brought AI-augmented humans to the brink of extinction.

#3 Waitlist & Alpha Access

The Showrunner is currently taking waitlist signups for early access. A private, exclusive Alpha program is also opening applications for people interested in creating new comedy shows set in Sim Fransisco or creating episodes for 'Exit Valley'.

Top entries will get the chance to be featured on Season 1 of Exit Valley, with selected creators receiving lump sum payment, revenue share, and IMDB credit as writer-director.

The first full season of Exit Valley, featuring episodes made by selected creators, is expected to launch in July 2024.

Currently, only the first episode of Exit Valley, as well as the teaser of a few Showrunner Originals, are available for public viewing on the Showrunner website.

What We Leave Behind - Showrunner Originals

Upon hearing about this new platform, we're excited to see how Showrunner brings a new level of interactivity and participation to the future of entertainment.

We have taken a good look at the platform's first AITV episode and publicly available teasers and found it to be a promising glimpse into the future of AI-powered entertainment. The storylines are intriguing and witty, and the characters' voices are impressively emotional and nuanced.

Unfortunately, the visuals seem a bit too static with just basic body movement (like mouth movement when talking, head nodding, or eyes looking in different directions) and without as frequent changes in scenes as we would expect from a traditional animated show.

We know we can't expect an AI-generated TV show to be as refined, detailed, and fluid as human-made animation just yet, but this early stage shows promise for the future evolution of the platform.
