Akaso Brave 4 vs Brave 7

The Akaso Brave series is often considered the cheaper alternative to GoPro, providing good value for money at a fraction of the cost. The Brave 4 is an older generation retailing at US$89.99, while the Brave 7 is a newer model costing US$169.99.

With quite a gap in price between the two models, let's compare the key features and specifications to see if the Brave 7 is worth the extra cost.

Key Takeaways

The Akaso Brave 7 offers superior features over the Brave 4, including built-in waterproofing, touchscreen, better stabilization, slow motion, pre-recording, voice control, and more intuitive remote control. However, the Brave 4 remains a good value option with core 4K recording capabilities, an exclusive motion detection feature, and a waterproof case that comes included.

Design

Akaso Brave 7

The Akaso Brave 7 is compact and lightweight with 66 x 44 x 34 mm dimensions and 112 grams weight, but it is still larger and heavier than the Brave 4, which measures 59 x 30 x 41 mm and weighs just 61.8 grams.

While both action cameras feature a dual-screen design, the Brave 7 has some advantages. First of all, its front screen is larger at 1.2 inches as compared to 0.96 inches on the Brave 4. Secondly, the rear screen on the Brave 7 is a more intuitive 2-inch IPS touchscreen, while the Brave 4 has a 2-inch IPS non-touch-sensitive screen, so it relies only on the buttons for control and operation.

Another design aspect where the Brave 7 offers an advantage is its IPX8 waterproof capability without the need for a separate housing, allowing it to be used underwater up to 10 meters depth. For a deeper dive down to 40 meters underwater, the waterproof housing is required to be purchased separately.

In contrast, the Brave 4 has no out-of-the-box waterproof capability and requires a separate waterproof housing for underwater use up to 40 meters. However, the waterproof housing is included in the Brave 4 package, so you won't need to spend additional money.

Video & Photo

While both action cameras share similar key video and photo capabilities, such as 4K video recording at 30fps, 20 MP image capture, and four adjustable angles with a 170° maximum field of view, the Brave 7 has some advantages.

The Brave 7 offers two modes not present on the Brave 4, including slow motion and pre-recording. Slow motion is supported up to 8x or 240fps at 720p. Pre-recording or hindsight allows the camera to continuously record and save only the last 15 seconds of footage before the shutter button is pressed, which can be useful for capturing unexpected moments.

The Akaso Brave 7 also features Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) 2.0, which is the upgraded version of the EIS system found in the Brave 4. It provides smoother and more stable video footage compared to the Brave 4.

The only advantage that the Brave 4 has over the Brave 7 in terms of video and photo capability is its 5x zoom, which is more than the 4x zoom that the Brave 7 offers. However, it may not be that much of an advantage because those are digital zoom and not optical zoom.

Digital zoom only crops and enlarges the image, resulting in a loss of quality, whereas optical zoom uses the camera's lens to physically get closer to the subject. So, the Brave 4's higher zoom leads to poorer image quality compared to the Brave 7's digital zoom. Can we still consider it an advantage? I don't think so.

Audio

The Akaso Brave 4 and Brave 7 support audio recording with the built-in microphone or a separate external microphone connected via the USB port.

However, only the Brave 7 offers Wind Noise Reduction, which can be enabled in the settings to minimize ambient wind noise during video recording for clearer audio capture. With this feature, the Brave 7 can provide better audio quality compared to the Brave 4.

Features

Remote Control of Akaso Brave 7

Both the Brave 4 and Brave 7 equally support mobile app control. When the camera is connected to the Akaso Go app via Wi-Fi, you can remotely control the camera, view live previews, download, edit, and share captured photos and videos from the camera to your smartphone.

Both cameras also come included with a remote control, but the Brave 7 has a more advanced remote control. Compared to the Brave 4's remote control with just two basic buttons for photo and video capture, the Brave 7's remote control features a shutter button, mode switch button, power button, and a small screen that displays the shooting mode, recording status, battery status, and SD card status.

The Brave 7 also supports voice control. When your hands are fully equipped and reaching your smartphone or the remote control is not convenient, you can simply use voice commands to control the camera.

While the Brave 4 doesn't have voice control, it offers a motion detection feature. It can automatically start recording and save 30-second footage when motion is detected, which can be useful for security or wildlife monitoring purposes.

Battery Life

Both action cameras come with two batteries, but the Akaso Brave 7 packs a larger 1350 mAh battery compared to the 1050 mAh battery in the Akaso Brave 4. However, that doesn't necessarily result in a longer battery life.

Perhaps due to the more power-hungry features on the Brave 7, the rated battery life of the two models is the same at 90 minutes at 4K recording per battery, with a total of 180 minutes when using both batteries.

Final Thoughts

Akaso Brave 4 vs Brave 7

Akaso Brave 7

The Akaso Brave 7 appears to be the more feature-rich and versatile action camera compared to the Brave 4, with its larger front screen, intuitive touchscreen interface, built-in waterproofing, advanced video stabilization, voice control, more sophisticated remote control, and additional modes like slow motion and pre-recording.

If none of these additional features are must-haves for your needs, the Akaso Brave 4 could still be a good choice that offers excellent value for money. Especially, it has a unique Motion Detection feature that the Brave 7 lacks, which can be useful for specific applications like security monitoring or wildlife recording.
