Updated October 2023
Ultimate Ears's new speaker, the Epicboom, is a great choice for anyone looking for a powerful but portable and durable speaker. This model seeks to bridge between the loudness of Hyperboom and the portability and durability of Megaboom, offering users the best of both models.
However, before coming to a purchase decision, there are a few aspects you should know about. In this review, we will go over the five key aspects of the UE Epicboom to help you decide if it's the right speaker for you.
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
Powerful, Portable, Durable
✓ 94 dBC Maximum Sound
✓ Adaptive and Custom EQ
✓ IP67 Dust and Water Resistant
✓ 17 Hours of Battery Life
#1 Price
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
The new UE Epicboom is in the mid-range price point for high-quality, portable speakers. It is retailed at around $349.99, which is a good deal considering its powerful sound and durable build. It is also more expensive than the less powerful Megaboom 3 at $199.99, but cheaper than the less durable Hyperboom at $449.99.
At this price, other than the speaker itself, you will also get a USB cable for charging and a Quick Start Guide to help you set up and start using your new speaker right away.
#2 Design & Durability
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
The Ultimate Ears Epicboom sits between the diamond shape of the Hyperboom and the cylindrical design of the Megaboom, offering a unique, rounded design that's easy to carry around but still with a large surface to deliver an epic sound. It measures 162 x 119 x 241 mm (L x W x H) and weighs around 1.9 kg, a perfect size and weight to bring to parties, picnics, and camping trips.
The Epicboom is highly durable with an IP67 rating, meaning that it is dustproof and waterproof against submersion in water for 30 minutes, and it can also withstand drops of up to 1 m without getting damaged. It even floats in the water, so you can bring it with you to the pool or the beach without worrying about it getting damaged.
Other than the iconic volume buttons, the UE Epicboom also features a power button, a Bluetooth pairing button, an Outdoor Boost button, an NFC connect button, and a Magic Button for one-tap control such as playing, pausing, and skipping tracks. You can also set up one-touch playlists on your favorite streaming platforms such as Spotify, Amazon Music (on Android only), and Apple Music for iOS, so you can easily access your music without having to fiddle with your phone.
#3 Audio Performance
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
The UE claims that this new Epicboom model delivers a maximum sound intensity of 10, powerful enough compared to the Hyperboom with a maximum sound intensity of 12, and Megaboom 3 with a maximum sound intensity of 4.
This exceptional sound quality is achieved through the use of two 1.7" active mid-high frequency transducers and one 4.6" woofer, delivering a 360-degree sound with deep bass and a loud maximum volume of 94 dBC. With the Outdoor Boost button, you can even get an extra 1 dB of sound to make your music heard better outdoors.
The EQ is adaptive and customizable. The BOOM app allows you to choose the perfect sound for any occasion with four different presets (Signature Bass Boost, Game/Cinema, Deep Relaxation) and a custom tuner.
#4 Connectivity
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
The UE Epicboom connects to devices via Bluetooth, which is a fast and reliable connection that allows you to connect to up to two devices simultaneously. It supports a maximum wireless range of 55 meters, which is better than the Hyperboom and Megaboom 3 with a maximum range of 45 meters.
One limitation is that Epicboom doesn't support Wi-Fi connectivity like Sonos' newly released speaker Move 2. This may be a potential dealbreaker for some users as a Wi-Fi connection can provide a high-quality audio stream without interruptions from calls or notifications and allows for streaming audio from anywhere in your home.
However, if you're looking for a speaker that you can use outdoors or anywhere you don't have access to Wi-Fi, the UE Epicboom is a perfect choice. It even comes with a new NFC Pairing, which allows you to quickly pair the speaker with your NFC-compatible Android phones. You can also connect it with any Boom, Megaboom, and Hyperboom models for an even more immersive and powerful sound experience.
#5 Battery & Power
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
The UE Epicboom is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can last for up to 17 hours on a single charge. This playtime is shorter when compared to the Hyperboom with 24 hours of battery life or Megaboom 3 with 20 hours of battery life. However, this should be enough to last you for a full day of partying, picnicking, or camping.
Final Thoughts
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
The Ultimate Ears Epicboom is perfect if you're looking for a mid-range speaker with a powerful audio performance, durable build, and portable design. It delivers a maximum sound level of 94 dBC with an IP67 rating, long-lasting 17 hours of battery life, and a reliable Bluetooth connection with NFC pairing.
