#2 Design & Durability
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
Hyperboom comes in a unique diamond shape in black and white color options, measuring quite large at 364 x 190 x 190 mm and weighing 5.9 kg. The Epicboom, on the other hand, is more compact with dimensions of 162 x 119 x 241 mm and a weight of 1.9 kg. It comes in charcoal black and cotton white color options, and has a more cylindrical shape with a fabric loop for easy carrying and better portability.
Both models feature a control panel with intuitive buttons for power, volume, playing tracks, pausing tracks, skipping tracks, and Bluetooth pairing. You can also set up one-touch playlists for your favorite songs or playlists for easy access. The Epicboom supports up to 4 playlists or albums from Spotify, Amazon Music (Android only), and Apple Music for iOS. The Hyperboom supports, Spotify (Android only), Amazon Music, Apple Music, and Deezer Premium.
In terms of durability, the Epicboom is the clear winner. It boasts an IP67 rating for dustproof and waterproof capability, making it an ideal choice for outdoor activities or pool parties. It can float in the water, be submerged temporarily for 30 minutes, and survive accidental drops of up to 1 m. The Hyperboom, on the other hand, has a lower IPX4 rating for water resistance only at the splash level. In addition, unlike the Epicboom, it is not drop-proof, dust-proof, or sand-proof.
#3 Sound & Performance
Ultimate Ears Hyperboom
Being endorsed as the UE's biggest, loudest, and boomiest speaker, the Hyperboom has an incredible sound with extreme bass and massive volume that can fill any room or outdoor space. It is powered by two 4.5" woofers, two 1" tweeters, and two 3.5" x 7.5" passive radiators. It delivers a high sound pressure level at 100 dBC and a frequency range of 45 Hz - 20 KHz.
While the Epicboom can't beat the Hyperboom's sound performance, it still delivers a solid performance with a 360-degree sound that fills the room. With a 4.6" woofer and two 1.7" active mid-high frequency transducers, the Epicboom can deliver a maximum sound level of 94 dBC in normal conditions, or you can get an extra 1 dB of sound for a higher 95 dBC in the Outdoor Boost mode.
The Epicboom is quite competitive with a sound intensity of 10, almost matching the Hyperboom's sound intensity of 12, according to Ultimate Ears. Epicboom also shares some audio features that the Hyperboom has, including the Adaptive and Custom EQ which you can customize via the Boom app.
#4 Connectivity
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
Both speakers connect to your devices via Bluetooth, but the Epicboom has a slight advantage with its better wireless range of 55 m, while the Hyperboom only supports a wireless range of 45 m, meaning that you can roam more freely with the Epicboom without easily losing connection.
The Epicboom also has an advantage with its NFC pairing, allowing for an easier and faster connection with your NFC-enabled Android phones.
Ultimate Ears Hyperboom
UE Hyperboom doesn't have such a feature, but it supports 4 different devices connected at the same time, allowing you to switch between them easily. You only have to connect two of them via Bluetooth, one via auxiliary, and the other one via optical input; then hit the source selector button to instantly switch between the devices with no pause to the music. The Epicboom, on the other hand, only supports a maximum of 2 simultaneous connections via Bluetooth.
The Hyperboom also has another advantage with its Charge Out feature, which allows you to charge your devices using its USB port, making it a convenient power bank for your phone or tablet.
#5 Battery & Power
Ultimate Ears Epicboom
Both speakers are powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, but the Hyperboom has a larger battery capacity that can last for up to 24 hours, making it an ideal choice for all-day events or longer trips. The Epicboom, on the other hand, offers up to 17 hours of battery life, which is still quite impressive for its size and portability.
Ultimate Ears Epicboom vs Hyperboom
Final Thoughts
Ultimate Ears Hyperboom
Hyperboom has a powerful audio performance with a longer battery life, but is less durable and more expensive than the Epicboom. If you want a speaker that can withstand harsh environments and conditions, the Epicboom is a better choice, especially with its competitive sound performance. However, if you want the loudest speaker possible and don't mind sacrificing durability, the Hyperboom might be the right choice for you.
