DJI Osmo Mobile 6 vs 7: Newer But Cheaper, How Come?

Updated February 2025

The newly announced DJI Osmo Mobile 7 is a successor to the 2022-released DJI Osmo Mobile 6, offering improved features and performance. However, at 89 USD, the DJI OM 7 is more budget-friendly than the DJI OM 6, which currently retails for 139 USD.
This is because the flagship gimbal title is taken by the more premium DJI OM 7P, while the DJI OM 7 is positioned as a more affordable, entry-level model. This leaves us wondering whether the DJI OM 7 is any better than the DJI OM 6 model.
So, what new features does the DJI OM 7 introduce and what capabilities does it sacrifice compared to the DJI OM 6? Let's find out!
Key Takeaways
While the DJI OM 7 boasts improved battery life, better subject tracking with native and third-party app tracking support, and a wider tilt range at a lower price point, it sacrifices the OM 6's premium features like the built-in extension rod and sophisticated Side Wheel controls.

Design & Controls

DJI Osmo Mobile 6
Judging from the overall appearance, the DJI OM 6 and DJI OM 7 look almost identical in a sleek, foldable design, but not until we examine the finer details.
On the side, the DJI OM 6 features a Side Wheel, which is a more sophisticated control than the Zoom Wheel on the DJI OM 7. Zoom Wheel only controls zoom, while the Side Wheel controls zoom and focal length, providing more precise control over your shots.
On the bottom, we spot another difference. We can pull out a built-in tripod from the DJI OM 7, which is not present on the DJI OM 6. The DJI OM 6 only comes with a grip tripod, which can be detached and attached depending on your needs. This difference has pros and cons for both models.
A built-in tripod on the DJI OM 7 means less equipment to carry, but the tripod is not that sturdy. It is only suitable for placement on level, stable surfaces in windless environments. For more challenging situations, you need to purchase the grip tripod separately.
In contrast, the grip tripod of the DJI OM 6 may be a hassle to carry around, but it offers more stability in various shooting scenarios. Plus, it comes included without additional purchase.

Choosing between a built-in tripod versus a detachable grip tripod comes down to your needs and circumstances, but the built-in extension rod on the DJI OM 6 clearly gives it an advantage, allowing you to extend the reach of your shots. The DJI OM 7, meanwhile, has no built-in extension rod.
The DJI OM 6 also comes in two color options – Slate Gray and Platinum Gray. The DJI OM 7 is only available in one color so far.
One design aspect where the DJI OM 7 takes the lead is the Magnetic Phone Clamp. It comes with a newer generation Magnetic Phone Clamp 4, which claims to provide a more secure and stable phone attachment compared to the previous Magnetic Phone Clamp 3 on the DJI OM 6. It supports larger smartphones up to 300 grams in weight, while the DJI OM 6 supports phones up to 290 grams.
Features

DJI Osmo Mobile 6
The DJI OM 7 still retains some core features of its predecessor DJI OM 6, such as Quick Launch, Gesture Control, Apple Watch Remote Control, ShotGuides, and AI-powered One-Tap Editing on the DJI Mimo app.
However, the DJI OM 7 supports the latest generation ActiveTrack 7.0, an improved subject-tracking technology compared to the ActiveTrack 6.0 on the DJI OM 6. It now supports multi-person detection and you can switch to focus on a different subject with a simple tap.
The DJI OM 7 also supports a Multifunctional Module. It expands subject tracking capability beyond the DJI Mimo app, so you can have the gimbal to track and follow a subject when using your phone's native camera app or other third-party apps.

The Multifunctional Module can also connect with DJI Mic Mini for audio reception and has a built-in fill light with adjustable brightness and color temperature. The Multifunctional Module is sold separately at USD 49, unlike the more premium DJI OM 7P which includes the Multifunctional Module in the box.

Another advantage that the DJI OM 7 has is a wider range of motion, especially in the tilt axis, allowing for more versatile and creative shots compared to the DJI OM 6. Below is the full comparison of their operation ranges:
Pan: DJI OM 7 (331°) vs. DJI OM 6 (334°) → Almost the same.
Roll: DJI OM 7 (332°) vs. DJI OM 6 (332°) → Identical.
Tilt: DJI OM 7 (324°) vs. DJI OM 6 (179°) → DJI OM 7 is significantly better.
Battery

DJI Osmo Mobile 7
The DJI OM 7 packs a 3350 mAh battery, three times more than the 1000 mAh battery capacity of the DJI OM 6. As a result, it can provide longer battery life, up to 10 hours of continuous use on a single charge, compared to the 6.4 hours of the DJI OM 6.
The DJI OM 7 also supports reverse charging, allowing you to use the gimbal as a power bank to charge your phone, which is not supported on the DJI OM 6.
However, a larger battery also means the longer time it takes to charge the device. The DJI OM 6 takes approximately 1.4 hours to fully charge, while the DJI OM 7 requires around 2.5 hours.

Final Thoughts

DJI Osmo Mobile 6
The DJI OM 7's more affordable price point compared to the DJI OM 6 can be attributed to its positioning as a more entry-level model in DJI's gimbal lineup. While it may sacrifice some advanced features found in its predecessor DJI OM 6, such as a built-in extension rod and Side Wheel control, it still offers improved capabilities in areas like subject tracking, battery life, and a wider range of motion.
If you're new to DJI gimbals, the DJI OM 7 is a great value option. However, if you already own a DJI OM 6 and are considering an upgrade to the DJI OM 7, you should expect to miss some features in exchange for newer capabilities like ActiveTrack 7.0 and Multifunctional Module support.
